ABOUT US

The committee was formed after extensive consultation and four open meetings with members of the communities in Comber, Portaferry, Kircubbin and Ards. In August 2000 the Ards Borough Sports Development Committee held its first meeting at the Ards Town Hall Arts Centre. Since then it has established itself as a landmark decision which the Council has not regretted. Our committee meets on a monthly basis to discuss all aspects and impacts of sport within the borough. Through our meetings we can offer: contacts with other and similar sports, facilitation to coaching courses, make meaningful recommendations and proposals to other bodies, provide small grant assistance and highlight the success of local sports stars through our annual Sports Awards. We receive support from Ards Borough Council in the form of funding and from the Sports Development Officer. Commendations should also go to Ards Borough Council and the efforts of our committee who give freely of their time to put something back into local sport. Member clubs pay is a nominal annual fee and are encouraged to attend meetings to add their experience to that of others. The highlight of our year is our acclaimed Sports Awards which usually takes place in March. The event is always a full house and attracts interest from many local companies and the media.

OUR AIM

The Ards Borough Sports Development Committee Council through it's Sport and Recreation service is committed to providing participation opportunities to all sectors of the community, and organises a comprehensive programme of Sports Development activities and special events which promote the town of Newtownards in a positive way.We will encourage and help develop all aspects of sport within the Ards Borough.
